Exporting Mailbox Data as PST Files in the New Microsoft Purview

Recently, Microsoft updated the interface of the Purview portal, and some menus and options have moved. I thought it would be helpful to explain how you can use the new menu to export only mailbox data in PST format.

First, go to https://compliance.microsoft.com and sign in with an account that has administrator permissions.
To be able to perform content searches and exports, your account needs to be assigned to the eDiscovery Manager role.

You can assign this permission by going to the Settings > Roles & Scopes menu on the left, then adding your account to the eDiscovery Manager role.

Starting the Content Search

Once the role is assigned, navigate to:
Solutions > Content Search from the left-hand menu.
Here you can see any searches you’ve previously created or start a new one.

Click Create a search to begin.
Give your search a name.
In the Add resource step, select only the users whose mailboxes you want to export.

Next, click Manage resource and uncheck the Site box — because we don’t need to include SharePoint or OneDrive data for this export.

If you don’t need to search for specific emails by date, subject, or other criteria — and simply want to export the entire mailbox — you can leave everything else as default and start the search without adding any filters.

Exporting the Results

Once the search is complete, use the Export button to create an export job.

Your export job will appear under the Exports menu. When it’s ready, you’ll see a Download button you can use to save the PST file to your computer.
