Security has become an increasingly critical concern in today’s world. Microsoft 365 is a platform where many users conduct their daily business activities, and as a result, it requires an additional layer of security. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a crucial tool for account security, and many organizations prefer to protect their users with MFA.
However, some organizations aren’t too happy with Microsoft Authenticator, the default verification method. They find that verification via SMS is easier and more compatible due to device requirements or user habits.
In this blog post, we will take a look at the steps we need to follow to use only SMS as the MFA method.
- Log in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with an administrator account.
- Select “Active Users” in the Left-Hand Menu: From the left-hand navigation menu, select “Active Users.”
- Navigate to the “Multi-Factor Authentication” Tab: In the “Active Users” section, find and click on the “Multi-Factor Authentication” option in the top menu.
- Access Service Settings: Once you’ve arrived at the “Multi-Factor Authentication” page, find and click on the “Service Settings” option in the top menu.
5- In the service settings page, you can edit the authentication methods. Here, you will need to disable authentication methods other than SMS. By selecting or deselecting the checkboxes next to the relevant authentication methods, you can enable or disable these methods. Remove the checkboxes for all authentication methods other than SMS to ensure that only SMS verification is used.
6- Save the Changes: After editing the settings, click the “Save” or “Confirm” button to save the changes.
By following these steps, you can disable non-SMS authentication methods in the multi-factor authentication settings. This will enable users to log in using only SMS verification.
