If you’re experiencing issues with Microsoft Edge browser sync for your work account—specifically seeing the “Can’t sync” error—the cause is often related to the Enterprise State Roaming feature. Enterprise State Roaming is a crucial functionality that enables synchronization of your browser data across multiple devices via your Microsoft 365 account.
If you are lucky, you can see the error details on the sign-in attempts. Basically, the error says “The service principal for resource xxxx is disabled.” So, we need to enable this service principal aka “Enterprise State Roaming” from Entra ID admin center.
To activate Enterprise State Roaming, your organization needs to have one of the following licenses:
Entra ID P1 or P2
Enterprise Mobility + Security E3
With any of these licenses, you can enable Enterprise State Roaming, allowing Edge data to be securely stored and synchronized across devices where you log in with your work account. However, if you lack one of these licenses, you’ll be unable to manage or activate this feature, and the “Can’t sync” error will persist.
For further information on enabling Enterprise State Roaming, check out the official documentation.
